Seeing another person suffer can be challenging- if you're a codependent (caretaker/ rescuer/ fixer/ people pleaser...) this will be particularly difficult. Trauma comes in many forms and yet the therapeutic treatment is basically the same. Trauma is stored in the more primitive, old part of the brain where language does not exist, thus rational processing is impossible at this stage. Releasing the flight/ flight/ freeze chemicals first is often the best way to treat trauma. This article reminds us how important aftercare immediately after rehab is.  Belonging to a therapeutic group wherein relapse prevention and lifeskills can be discussed is one of the most critical steps to be taken once you leave rehab.
