Addiction is not in itself the problem, it is rather the attempt to solve a problem...

Posted by LP User on Thursday, November 29, 2018,
Brilliant article where Gabor Mate, Specialist addicioin dr refers to addiction as not a disease/ disorder nor an addictive personality, but rather a response to loss/ trauma usually in childhood.
Compulsive behaviours are damaging in the long term, but "solve" the problem temporarily. What I mean by this is that it makes the current situation more bearable. So using is an attempt to find happiness....

So finding healthier ways to find happiness and resolving childhood trauma must be part of th...

2018 looking back

Posted by LP User on Thursday, November 29, 2018,
This is why I love my job.
In reviewing my year I came to see how many of my clients have really changed.

From addicts in active addiction moving into sustainable recovery to stressed out moms TRE'ing off daily stresses becoming better moms, to cancer patients post chemo starting to feel their feet again (through TRE) to those in long term recovery shifting deeper into even more meaningful lives.

I sometimes come home after a day in my shared private practice just marveling at the variety of ...

Another article reporting on how childhood adversity "stays" in the body and manifests later as illnesses.

".....Often, these illnesses can be chronic and lifelong. Autoimmune disease. Heart disease. Chronic bowel disorders. Migraines. Persistent depression. Even today, doctors puzzle over these very conditions: why are they so prevalent; why are some patients more prone to them than others; and why are they so diffic...

Amphetamines: "tik" and other stimulants

Amphetamines represent a category of drugs known as stimulants and speed up the central nervous system. They act in a similar way as the natural hormone adrenaline would in the body.

Amphetamines include dextroamphetamines (legally manufactured medications) which have been used for hyperactivity, sleeping and eating disorders; and methamphetamines (illegally manufactured substances eg tik.

Short term effects may include: increased alertness and energy, feeling of well-being, increased heart ra...

Self trust in addiction:

Posted by LP User on Monday, March 3, 2014, In : addiction treatment
The way to build self-trust, Dr Marc Lewis explained, and get over an addiction is for the addict to begin an internal dialogue with his future self to convince his present self that it can, in fact, live without its addiction. Lewis finished by explaining how he did just that. By writing the simple word 'NO' on a piece of paper and reading it at every moment he had a craving, he gradually started believing that if he could cope a few hours without drugs, then he could cope for a few days and...

Outpatient Group Addiction Therapy benefits addicts/alcoholics

Posted by LP User on Wednesday, April 3, 2013, In : Recovery group
In my experience the power of the group is extremely beneficial to a person with addiction issues.

Whether you consider yourself a social drinker who occasionally goes overboard (ok maybe more than occasionally if youre honest...), a shopaholic who just cant quite stick to the budget (ok your three credit cards are maxed!) or someone who is fastidious about tidiness (you find yourself spending hours cleaning the kitchen, daily) belonging to a recovery support group can be a lifesaver. Relatin...

SOS: Negative to Positive thinking

Posted by LP User on Wednesday, April 3, 2013, In : Whats worked for me
The other day I found myself sinking into a bit of a dip and beginning to entertain the idea of a self piteous afternoon. Suddenly I realised to how much a part of this feeling I was contributing. I stopped, observed my thoughts and steered away from the negativity. Deciding not to allow this feeling to dominate my afternoon, was empowering. It showed me I can change the way Im thinking and feeling, and therefore behaving.
What a relief!

Codependents' enabling acts: helping or harming?

Posted by LP User on Sunday, March 24, 2013, In : codependency
Seeing another person suffer can be challenging- if you're a codependent (caretaker/ rescuer/ fixer/ people pleaser...) this will be particularly difficult. The thing with the actions of codependency is that they feel so helpful, so natural, so healthy. This is all part of the denial. Only after you've come through this illusion will you be able to discern what is healthy and what is not. Let me give you some examples:
  • Helping your friends by lending them money, and insisting on them not p...
